About the Class:
This course will be an in-depth study on drawing the human figure. Emphasis will be placed on an understanding the gesture, form, and drawing process of the human figure. The complex structures of the figure will be simplified into manageable units. Each session will be supplemented with lectures, drawing concepts, and demonstrations. This course analyzes the application of both traditional and unconventional principles and techniques for drawing the human figure using any instrument of drawing, whether it is graphite pencil, charcoal, paint or computer software.
Course level:
This class is for beginning to intermediate students. Some drawing experience is recommended but not required.
Class Format:
This course will be taught live via Zoom and will run for 10 weeks, 3 hours each session. We will start each session with the lecture and demos for the week’s topic. We will draw from high quality photo references from professional models. All lectures and critiques will be recorded and made available for students to view. Class will be limited to 10 students.
Materials:
This course will be taught with a mixture of traditional and digital lectures. For students, using a traditional medium is encouraged but not required. A supply list for materials will be emailed.
Media Requirements:
Users need a Zoom mobile app or desktop application for Windows or Mac. A Zoom account isn’t required to attend a meeting. Students will be sent the class link to be connected.
Refund Policy:
For cancellations, the deadline for a full refund is 5 days before class starts. After that only a partial, %50 refund will be given once the class has already started. This refund will only be granted up until the 5th session of the class. No refund will be issued after the 5th session of the course. A full refund will be issued if a class is cancelled by EdgarSilvaArt before the term starts. A prorated amount will be refunded if a class is cancelled by EdgarSilvaArt after the term has begun.
Weekly breakdown
Week- 1 Intro to gesture drawing. Introduce the drawing process (1D-2D-3D)
Intro to Class: Talk about course objectives and materials, intro to gesture drawing, and the drawing process (1D-2D-3D). Go over the 2 main ideas in art.
Week- 2 Gesture drawing and form balance: (parts-connections, gesture-structure)
Introduce rhythm, stretch and pinch idea. Understanding how to identify the overall gesture and weight balance of the figure in a 3-dimensional space.
Week- 3 Introduce simple form connections; head, neck and shoulder
Continue gesture and contour. Introduce simple form connections for head, neck and shoulder.
Week- 4 Introduce proportion, and bony landmarks
Continue gesture and contour. Introduce standard proportion, and identifying bony landmarks to understand the underlying skeletal structure of the figure.
Week-5 Introduce Structure and form Construction
Continue proportions and bony landmarks. Introduce figure structure and form construction. lecture on properties of basic structures and its application process on the figure..
Week-6 Introduce head construction
Continue structure drawing. Introduce head construction and the structural planes of the head.
Week-7 Torso structure and form construction
Continue head construction. Introduce torso construction
Week-8 Arm structure and form construction
Continue torso construction. Introduce arm construction. The mechanics and forms of the upper arms and its relationship to the shoulders
Week-9 Hip and leg construction
Continue arm construction. Introduce hip and leg construction. The mechanics and forms of the lower leg
Week- 10 Lecture on form, value and laws of Light
Tonal, lecture on light and shadow. Light and shadow - parts to shadow, 2 value statement. Rendering, light and shadow, basic forms. The basics of light and shadow and rendering techniques. How to communicate the volume of forms using the 6 value process.
